The Great Soul Trial by John G. Fuller was published in 1969 and documents the story of a prospector who left a fortune to a study of the soul.

The search for the (a) soul has consumed many people and civilizations. More recently, Thomas Moore picked up the trail in his books, including Care of the Soul.  Difficult to prove, but hard to deny, the soul seems to surface in retirement. It is easier to deal with it at a practical level, as opposed to a metaphysical one.
